Hyssop, or Hyssopus officinalis, more commonly called the "Holy Herb" is an evergreen garden herb of the mint family (Lamiaceae), grown for its aromatic leaves and flowers. Hyssop considered a holy herb due to its mention in the Bible and use during Biblical times for its cleansing effect in connection with plague, leprosy and chest ailments and symbolically in cleansing the soul. Hyssop is an antioxidant herb that is used today to treat respiratory and digestive diseases, and viral infections. It works well as an expectorant and antispasmodic herb for by aiding in suppressing coughs and clearing the lungs of phlegm. It has also been claimed to be helpful in treating herpes, asthma, ulcers cancer, and as a potent antiviral with anti-microbial properties.
